Tennessee Residents Can Smell Rain Coming

KINGSPORT, TN - Tennessee residents may be familiar with the distinct, refreshing smell that often accompanies rain, but few know the science behind this common phenomenon.

According to the American Chemical Society, the scent, known as "petrichor," is caused by a combination of natural elements and reactions that occur when rain interacts with the environment.

When rain hits the ground, it causes the release of oils produced by plants during dry periods.

These oils are absorbed by the soil and rocks and are released into the air when raindrops disturb the ground, according to the American Chemical Society.

Additionally, a chemical compound called geosmin, produced by soil-dwelling bacteria, is another key contributor to the earthy smell of rain, according to the American Chemical Society.

In Tennessee’s humid climate, rainstorms are common, and the conditions are ideal for creating the petrichor scent. The state's rich soils and diverse plant life further amplify this effect.

So, the next time a storm rolls in, Tennesseans can breathe in that familiar scent, knowing it's the result of nature’s fascinating chemistry.
