    Wolf Population Increasing in Michigan

MIDLAND, MI - The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) recently released its 2024 winter wolf population survey, estimating 762 wolves in the Upper Peninsula (U.P.).

According to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, this represents an increase of 131 wolves from the 2022 count of 631, yet the DNR emphasizes that the population remains stable, consistent with the trend observed over the past 14 years.

Brian Roell, the DNR’s large carnivore specialist, explained that the population has likely reached its biological carrying capacity in the U.P.

“When a wild population reaches this stable point, it is typical to see slight variations from year to year,” Roell said.

The survey found wolves distributed among 158 packs, averaging about 4.8 wolves per pack.

According to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, this year’s population estimate is the highest since 2012. The DNR’s survey method focuses on identifying wolf tracks in snow during the winter, providing a reliable count when wolf populations are at their lowest yearly point.

The DNR is also exploring new methods, including track surveys and trail cameras, to improve future population estimates.
