The parenting experience the second time around is never the same as the first. No matter how much they may look alike, each baby comes with their own unique personality and temperament. It’s like the universe wants to keep you on your toes or something.

But you should have a better idea this time around of what baby gear works well for you--what baby products are faves or fads, which brands you trust, and what works best for your routine. In preparing for a second child, however, you may not know which must-haves will help you navigate the challenge of parenting with more than one child.

A Deal on a Double Stroller

If you need a double stroller, the Joovy Caboose Too Graphite Stand-On Tandem Stroller is a winner. The wheels can go from a two-seater to a one-seater with a standing platform for your toddler. The large canopy keeps the sun off both children, and the seats recline for comfort.

When I was a young mother, I had a similar stroller and would load up the kids and walk to Costco. I’d use the back like a cart and my toddler and I walked it home with the back of the stroller packed with groceries. It held up. We took that stroller everywhere.

If you’re considering a side-by-side stroller, it’s easier to see what’s going on with both children at once. Keep in mind though, it’s harder to maneuver through narrow hallways and shopping aisles. This link joins the debate on tandem versus side-by-side strollers if you’d like to figure out your preference. I prefer the tandem because it can easily accommodate an older child. But there are lots of options out there and a different style may work better for you.

    Genius Shopping Gear

If you don’t already have a shopping cart hammock from Binxy Baby, you’re going to want to move that beauty to the top of the registry list. This baby cradler snaps into almost any shopping cart, leaving plenty of room for groceries underneath your baby. I particularly appreciate how compact the hammock is when you’re done. It’s easily stowed in your purse or diaper bag, and yet is substantial enough to keep your baby secure in a 3-point harness. While you’re on their website, check out the shopping cart covers that keep toddlers safe and secure in a germ-free environment. You can shop with both children in the cart and still have room for actual food. Miraculous!

    A Better Diaper Bag

Now that you’re dealing with your second pregnancy, I’m guessing you’re ready to ditch that first diaper bag. I know I was. Go hands-free with a backpack style Ergobaby diaper bag. I particularly like the slim design and classic fabrics. Not a duckie or teddy bear in sight! I’d happily wear these sturdy bags anywhere.

Check out their baby carriers while you’re on their site, as well. Keep your hands free, just in case you have to run after a runaway toddler.

    An Extra Eye on Things

Well, yes, ideally you’d have a helper from time to time, and a housecleaner while we’re at it, but what I’m referring to is a baby camera monitor. The Wansview is affordable and works with Alexa. Also, a motion detector that pings to your phone? Yes, please!

    A New Bed

Whether you need to get a new crib for the baby because your toddler won’t give up theirs, or graduate the older child to a big kid bed, you’re going to need to figure out new sleeping arrangements. It’s kind of fun to include your child in the discussion so they’re prepared when a change takes place, and it helps them to feel like part of the conversation.

Cribs that convert into toddler beds are a popular, economical choice.

Best of luck! And congratulations on your growing family!
