Officials warn Virginia residents to keep distance from venomous caterpillars

Sightings of the “puss caterpillar,” a hairy and almost harmless looking creature, have been reported to the Virginia Department of Forestry's health team this week, CBS reports.

Officials say that the sightings were reported in eastern Virginia counties, and while the creatures look harmless, they are not.

The forestry department posted on their Facebook page saying, "#SocialDistance away from this caterpillar!" while posting a photo of the furry insect.

(VIRGINIA) The post went on to explain the hazard the caterpillar poses to humans. "The 'hairs' of this caterpillar are actually venomous spines that cause a painful reaction if touched."

The puss caterpillar is the most poisonous variety of caterpillar in North America and is the larva of the southern flannel moth.

Scientists warn that simply brushing against the insect can cause "excruciating pain," according to National Geographic. Poisonous spines are concealed within the caterpillar’s fur.

"The sting produces an immediate intense burning pain followed the appearance of a red grid-like pattern on the skin that matches the pattern of the venomous spines on the caterpillar," according to a report from the University of Florida entomology and nematology department.

Making contact with the caterpillar can cause vomiting, rashes, muscle cramps, fever, swollen glands and even shock.

The puss caterpillar is mainly found in the South and eats oak and elm leaves. The caterpillar has also been found near buildings and parks, according to officials.

"If you find the caterpillar, leave it alone and let its natural enemies control their populations— there are a number of other insects that will prey on them at different stages of their life cycle," the Virginia Department of Forestry said.

Pets are also vulnerable and pet owners are warned to keep their animals away from the venomous caterpillars.

The owner of an 83-pound Bouvier Terrier-mix named Beethoven told CBS affiliate WPEC that the dog rolled its face over a puss caterpillar, causing a blistered, puffy red eye that required immediate veterinary attention.
