(WASHINGTON) President Joe Biden's task force to reunite migrant families separated by the Trump administration will allow these families the option of being reunified either in the United States or their county of origin, according to NBC News.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas made the announcement during a White House press briefing on Monday.

“We are hoping to reunite the families, either here or in their country of origin," he said. "We hope to be in a position to give them the election. And if, in fact, they seek to reunite here in the United States, we will explore lawful pathways for them to remain in the United States."

Lawyers representing the families in a federal lawsuit have asked the Biden administration to make this move, arguing this special protection is needed in order to ease the burden of those parents choosing between bringing their children back to possible danger in their home countries or remaining separated.

Mayorkas, who ridiculed how the Trump administration "dismantled our nation's immigration system," also named announce Michelle Brané as executive director of the task force.

"It is hard and it will take time but rest assured we are going to get it done," he said.
