Toad captured by San Francisco police in SoMa

Earlier today, March 30, on Mission and 1st street, a San Francisco resident captured video footage of a toad rescued in a box and uploaded it to the popular crime app, Citizen.

The video revealed an individual—presumably San Francisco police—touching a box that was on the ground with gloved hands.

A look into the box revealed a live toad. According to the video caption, the toad is safe. We are pleased to hear it, and hope if this toad is wild, that it choose a cheaper city to live in, and if it is domestic, that it find its owner as soon as possible.

It is more likely, in fact, that the large, slimy toad is in fact a large frog, namely the Northern Leopard Frog, which lives in the Bay Area.

This frog eats insects, animals and even birds. Could it be toads are taking over the City to diminish the local pigeon population?

Questions abound:

Was it someone’s pet? Was it trying to break into a local business? Can it sing? Should we all be trying to get a toad as a pet?

We don’t know.

But we can guess that this toad is not currently in the right place at the right time.

We’re glad to see San Francisco police are out on this sunny day, capturing rogue amphibians and giving us all a little bit more hope.
