Connecticut Company Invents Chocolate Toothpaste; Kids Everywhere Cheer

    2021-04-01

    Tell mint to move over.

Parents and kids alike are going to smile when they find out chocolate toothpaste is real and not just the kind of daydream fantasy that involves Willy Wonka imagery and the idea bedrooms double as ball pits.

    Dr. Sheffield's

"My 11-year-old daughter would fight me every morning and every night over using all the typical mint and bubblegum flavored toothpastes we'd find at Target and CVS," says Diane Korn, 41, of West Hartford. "It was the worst. Carli would complain that mint toothpaste was too 'spicy' and the bubblegum flavors were too medicinal tasting. Every now and then we might find a grape or strawberry flavor at the store, but she hated those too. She'd always mutter about wishing they made ice cream cake flavored toothpaste, or something that tasted like cookies."

Korn, who says she had basically given up on brushing her daughter's teeth sometime around the second grade, recently found Sheffield's Natural toothpastes through the suggestion of another Hartford-area mom. "It's been life-changing for Carli because the Sheffield's chocolate flavor tastes like a Dixie Cup ice cream to her, and she is actually enthusiastic about brushing her teeth now. The last few years had me ready to pull my hair out until I found this."

    Dr. Sheffield's Chocolate Toothpaste

The Dr. Sheffield's Chocolate Toothpaste variety is relatively new to the brand's nationally-available, fluoride-free lineup that's catching on like wildfire in Facebook parenting groups and whisper networks. The brand found major success with their original kid-friendly flavor varieties including Strawberry Bananas and Mixed Berry, which are all certified natural.

The wellness-minded brand announced it has added two new flavors, Cinnamon and Chocolate, to its nationally-available, fluoride-free lineup. Made with natural flavors, they join Extra Whitening, Wintergreen, Activated Charcoal, Peppermint, Sensitive Care, Strawberry Banana and Mixed Berry for Kids varieties to the Dr. Sheffield’s portfolio of certified natural toothpastes. The kid-specific line is ideal for children ages three and older, has a creamy texture and smooth taste, and is made with real chocolate flavor. And yes, it actually reduces plaque, freshens breath, and whitens teeth.

According to the brand's website, "Dr. Sheffield’s is a new line of toothpaste made from an age-old recipe reminiscent of simpler times. In the mid-1870s, Dr. Washington W. Sheffield, a respected dentist from New London, Connecticut, invented a ‘creme dentrifice’ for his patients, replacing the unsavory powders of the time. He was the first to put toothpaste in a tube, and the rest is history. Over 160 years later, Sheffield is back and harsh synthetics are out. Sheffield’s timeless formulas are still free of fluoride, synthetic detergents and foaming agents, GMOs and artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners - and actually taste good!"

“As the originators of toothpaste, we’re on a mission to bring our effective clean formulas to families across the country,” said Jeffrey Davis, President & Chief Executive Officer at Sheffield Pharmaceuticals. “Our new Chocolate and Cinnamon flavors were created to fill a strong consumer need for alternatives to harsh, synthetic toothpaste formulas on the market, that are safe for adults and kids alike, but also have the great taste and feel consumers want,” Davis added.

Shoppers seem to agree, with thousands of rave reviews on Amazon reporting that the toothpaste is everything you might hope for and more.

"Seriously. I have been saying I was going to order chocolate toothpaste since I found out it existed. Sure, it's for kids. Do I care? Not one bit. Did I order it? You bet I did. Was it all that I hoped it would be? Good Lord, yes," writes one top reviewer. "Flavour: This is straight up tastes like chocolate cake batter. It almost tastes wrong. Toothpaste isn't supposed to be fun, or taste good. This tastes amazing. No weird aftertaste. Size: Medium sized tube. Two tubes. I was going to share, but nope, that's not happening. Texture: Doesn't really foam unless you use too much. (I tested) It is more paste like than the boring old toothpaste that you can get anywhere that has no fun value and makes brushing your teeth a routine chore. Leaves a good clean feeling in your mouth, just clean. Not ...sanitized the way some of the minty toothpastes can. You could probably even drink orange juice safely after brushing your teeth, but I'm guessing here because I hate orange juice."

Now that's a toothpaste review, isn't it? Diane agrees.

"My daughter is so hooked on the chocolate stuff that we told just about everyone we know from the West Hartford JCC, and we've heard that it's quickly caught on with all of Carli's friends from camp who live in North Jersey, Long Island, and Westchester. The kicker? I bought the adult cinnamon one for myself, and yeah, it's like having a cinnamon roll in my mouth -- except this is considered a healthy habit. Amazing, right?"

Dr. Sheffield's Toothpaste is available on Amazon starting at $11.99 for the kids' chocolate flavor, and $12.99 for adult-friendly tubes.
