This story is a fiction piece, and it was created from my imagination.

Early Tuesday morning on March 30, local EMS heroes rescued someone who, it turns out, didn’t need rescuing.

“We saw his gills when we pulled him out of the water,” one of the EMTs said. “And the tail—unmissable. He was like part shark part human. We apologized then put him back. Ronny passed out, of course,” he said, poking his sallow-faced buddy in the stomach.

Could it be? A merman was sighted at Land’s End?

Of course not. This story is fictional. After today, none of my stories will be fictional. They will be factual with wild conjectures thrown in.

So this is one last hurrah, about a rescuee-turned-merman-turned-city-mascot.

    The merman’s name is Cody.

Cody was born in Nova Scotia. He’s already in the San Francisco society pages in all the local papers.

Rumor has it, many eligible young humans are trying to find ways to become mermaids.

“We didn’t think being a mermaid was a real thing,” one of them nearly swooned just getting the words out. “But it is, oh it really is, and I’m going to be first in line to live in the sea with my love, Cody.”

Cody looks a lot like a fish. More fish than human. His jaw is long and his face is pointed. He also doesn’t speak any human languages. Really he sounds like a fish.

He thrashes his tail around on Baker Beach most days. The children think he’s wearing a costume. But he’s not.

In fact, Cody is becoming San Francisco’s new mascot! Hear-hear!
