(MANHATTAN, N.Y.) A group of people marched across Manhattan Bridge late Monday to protest the death of 20-year-old Daunte Wright, who was shot and killed by a police officer at a traffic stop in Minneapolis.

According to CNN, the shooting happened Sunday in Brooklyn Center, a Minneapolis suburb of about 30,000 people. Brooklyn Center is also about 10 miles away from where former police officer Derek Chauvin is on trial for killing George Floyd.

CBS New York reported that a group marched from Brooklyn to Manhattan in Monday night's rain. The protests were peaceful and the New York City Police Department reported no arrests.

Following the tragedy, Minnesota's Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon said he believed the officer intended to deploy her taser instead of her gun.

"Policing, in the profession, is about compliance. You can achieve compliance either through communication skills or through use of force," said Dr. Maria Haberfeld, a professor of police science at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, per CBS New York.

Haberfeld explained that, on average, police officers have up to 120 hours of training in the use of force, but less than 10 hours of training in communication skills.

"This is why they’re so quick to resort to use of force," said Haberfeld. "They’re not trained to achieve compliance in any other way."

On Tuesday, Brooklyn Center Mayor Mike Elliott said Officer Kim Potter, who shot Wright and Gannon, who said the shooting was accidental, had turned in their resignation letters, per CNN.
