Ginny & Georgia Renewed for Second Season of Wellesley, Massachusetts Drama

    2021-04-19

The hit Netflix series is based on idyllic Wellesley, not Wellsbury.

If you tuned into Netflix's recent teen drama, Ginny & Georgia, this year and loved it -- good news, it's coming back for a second season set in Wellsbury, Massachusetts, a fictional town based on the very-real charm of actually-on-the-map Wellesley.

If you didn't get a chance to watch the first season of the series yet, here's a little recap: Angsty and awkward fifteen year old Ginny Miller, played by Antonia Gentry, often feels she doesn't measure up to her thirty year old mother, the irresistible and dynamic Georgia Miller, played by Brianne Howey. Growing up on the move, Georgia desperately wants to put down roots in picturesque New England and give her family something they've never had... a normal life.  But it's not all carpool and Kombucha as Georgia's past follows them to threaten her and her family's fresh start.

The show offers a fairly accurate depiction of Wellesley, the basis of fictional Wellsbury, with a dizzying array of well-to-do parents, liberal-slanted policies and inclusion (Ginny's character finds a lot of peace and comfort in these as they were so hard to find in her last home in Texas), and hard-nosed studying.

“We are so appreciative of the incredible response and love you all have shown Ginny & Georgia," shared showrunner and executive producer Debra J. Fisher and creator and executive producer Sarah Lampert. "We can’t wait to return to Wellsbury for Season Two.”

Lampert continued, "We wanted to make a grounded show with real teenagers, real emotions, and honesty. Fifteen-year-old girls go through a lot. Like, a hell of a lot. Something we talked about a lot in the writers’ room is that everyone is fighting a battle that you can't see. And although our characters are flawed we treat them with compassion, which is something the world needs more of right now. We weren’t really interested in labeling our characters 'right' and 'wrong' or passing judgement on them, but instead wanted to explore their gray areas."

It's something that resonated with viewers across the Massachusetts, the entire United States, and even the world. More than 52 million Netflix member households chose to watch the new coming-of-age series in its first 28 days on the streaming platform, making it all the way to the top 10 list in 87 countries around the world, and a number one hit in 46 including Australia, Brazil, Kenya, and obviously the United States.

"So much of this show is personal to me.The show is set in a fictional town in Massachusetts but based on where I grew up, and many characters are inspired by friends of mine and things that happened to us in high school," Lampert adds. "I really did fall on my way out of 9th grade Spanish and my tampon flew across the room and hit my crush in the forehead. I got caught shoplifting. My mom ran Sophomore Sleepover, and pretty much everything Ellen (Jennifer Robertson) says in that episode is a direct quote from my mom. I’ve been in a very dramatic love triangle — I really did have a Marcus (Felix Mallard) and a Hunter Mason Temple). So keeping that rooted in authenticity was important."

Season Two of Ginny & Georgia hasn't started to film yet, nor does it have a release date as of now. We're told the new season will feature 10 all-new 60 minute episodes, and may film in Toronto, Canada, which is where Season One was shot. Sadly, Wellesley was merely inspiration and won't be the site of any actual filming (although rumor has it there may be a tie-in promotion in the real town).
