Omaha Families Can Do These Things for Free This Summer

School is out in just over a month. Are you ready for your children to be home for the summer? If you're starting to make summer plans for your family, here are some fun and free things to do in the Omaha, Nebraska area.
Need something fun to do in Omaha on a budget? There are lots of fun and free things to do in Omaha by yourself, as a couple or as a family. Here are some of our favorites!
Get Inspired by Local Art and Museums Did you know that Omaha has some amazing local art and displays that you can visit free of charge? Be sure to check out the Joslyn Art Museum. While this museum does offer free admission, however some exhibits may have a small charge. Due to current health conditions, timed entry may be required at some attractions. Visit the museum website for more details and to obtain advance tickets if necessary.
The Omaha Children’s Museum and Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo are also usually included in this program as well, however free Partnership Passes are not available for those attractions at this time.
The Bellevue library also has free passes to the Durham Museum, as well as Fontonelle Forest and Lauritzen Garden. Ask at the library for more details.
Kids Bowl Free Did you know that kids can bowl free during the summer at participating locations? This fun activity can be done regularly and all you have to pay for is shoe rental. Lots of Nebraska bowling lanes participate including ones in Omaha. Learn more and find where kids bowl free at www.kidsbowlfree.com.
Free Roller Skating For Kids In addition to free bowling, kids can get free skating too! Visit kidsskatefree.com to learn more about locations where kids can roller skate for free, and all you do is pay for skate rental.
Make a Stop at Kenefick Park Did you know that your family can visit these cool trains that welcome visitors to Omaha as they cross over the river from Iowa? Kenefick Park has train engines on display including the Centennial No. 6900 - the largest and most powerful diesel-electric locomotive ever built - and Big Boy No. 4023 - the world's largest steam locomotive.
Featuring several plazas, seating areas, a grand staircase, "canyon" stone walls, interpretive signage, sculpture and walkways, the park documents Union Pacific Railroad's role in the development of Omaha and the West. Admission to the park is free and free parking is available at Lauritzen Gardens.
Participate in the Nebraska Passport Program This fun adventure program helps you find some of Omaha and Nebraska’s best hidden gems and your family could win prizes just for participating in the free Nebraska Passport Program.
Explore Omaha’s Old Market Up for window shopping in some cool shops and galleries, and to visit some of the neatest stores that Omaha has to offer? Make a stop in Old Market for lots of fun shopping, plus it’s a great place to grab fantastic eats as well.
Visit Bob Want a fun walk that takes you between two states? Be sure to check out the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge that crosses the Missouri river and on the Nebraska side, enjoy the 3-acre Omaha Plaza with an interactive water jet fountain, and access to the National Park Service Visitors Center. The bridge is connected to more than 150 miles of nature trails.
Go Fish Have a fishing licence and a rod and reel? Fishing as a family can be fun and affordable, and even if you haven’t gone before, can be easily done with a small purchase of equipment. Don’t have a fishing licence, but want to try it out with your kids? Take advantage of Nebraska’s free fishing days. Learn more at takemefishing.org.
