Lottery opens for 41 affordable studio apartments in South Bronx, starting from $843/month

(BRONX, N.Y.) A new rental building is now accepting applications for 41 affordable studio apartments in the South Bronx. The apartments are located at 972 Washington Avenue in the Morrisania neighborhood.

According to 6sqft, the 12-story building was developed by the Postgraduate Center for Mental Health and has a total of 107 units, with 82 studios and 24 two-bedroom apartments.

The units are set aside for adults and families with a history of mental illness as well as formerly homeless, disabled and low-income New Yorkers.

The 41 studio units being made available to the public through the lottery are those remaining in the building.

New Yorkers earning 60% of the area median income, between $31,406 and $50,160 annually for a one-person household and between $31,406 and $57,300 annually for a two-person household, are eligible to apply. The studios start at $843/month.

The building's amenities include on-site social services, a community room, a shared laundry room, a children’s play area, security cameras as well as community events and classes. Smoking is also permitted in units.

Transit options nearby include the Harlem line of Metro-North at the Melrose station, the 2 and 5 subway trains at Intervale Avenue as well as the Bx6, Bx13, and Bx21. 6sqft also reports that the building is about a mile east of Yankee Stadium.

Qualifying New Yorkers can apply for the apartments until June 25. Preference for 50% of the housing units will be given to residents of Bronx Community Board 3.
