If you are looking for country cooking in Cumming, Georgia, you have a lot of choices. But if you want that food fast, hot, and delicious, accompanied by the best biscuits in the land, you need to get to Fagan's Biscuit Barn.
Fagan's Biscuit Barn is located in the Big Creek community of Cumming, Georgia on Hwy 141.
The Fagan family has lived on and farmed the land around Fagan's Biscuit Barn in Cumming, Georgia, for almost 200 years. The birth of the Biscuit Barn began in 1923 when A.C. Fagan started a small community grocery store. He sold food and dry goods and even had a gasoline pump for automobiles that were becoming more popular.
In the 1950s, after returning home from World War II, Bill Fagan Senior built a second store in Cumming, Georgia. In the '80s, he took over his parent's store and constructed a new building to house it. He began selling homemade biscuits and hamburgers in the new store, and the idea for the Biscuit Barn was born.
I first became acquainted with Fagan's Biscuit Barn about five years ago when we first moved to Forsyth County. We lived a couple of miles from the Midway Meal House and became regulars there. But a neighbor said we had to try the Biscuit Barn, so we made the five-mile trek over to Hwy 141 and gave it a try.
We were surprised to learn when we got there that, unlike the Meal House, you ordered from the counter at Fagan's Biscuit Barn. And even though we got there for an early lunch, the line was already to the door. But the service was quick and efficient, which gave us time to look over the extensive menu.
Since they are only open until 2 pm, you can order breakfast anytime or lunch starting at 11. This gave us a lot of menu to look over. They also have a daily special displayed on the board by the order line. My wife is a fan of breakfast, so she ordered the "Red Barn," two eggs scrambled with bacon, grits, gravy, and, of course, homemade biscuits.
I'm more of a lunch guy and decided to order my go-to meal in any "meat and two" restaurant, country-fried steak. They also have daily specials for sides, but I stayed with mashed potatoes (and more gravy) and fried okra. And biscuits. Who can resist made from scratch biscuits?
You should keep in mind when ordering sides at Fagan's Biscuit Barn in Cumming, Georgia, that the Fagan's still work a vegetable garden, and those vegetables are cooked and served in the restaurant. Even though the okra was covered in a light cornmeal batter and fried, the freshness of the vegetable shone through.
The biscuits, hot, fresh and buttery, are slightly different from the standard biscuits you get anywhere else. I don't cook biscuits, so I can't tell what they do differently, but these are more substantial - almost more bread-like. But they are delicious as a place calling themselves the Biscuit Barn would have to serve.
Despite the history of the place, they have adopted modern ways, and you can place your order online, so it's ready for pickup by the time you get there. I can see this as an advantage to avoid the long lines at lunch. The dining room is large and roomy and (usually) can handle the crowd. They also offer a catering menu.
If you are in Cumming, Georgia, and looking for a delicious traditional country meal with biscuits and more biscuits, you need to get yourself to Fagan's Biscuit Barn.
