    Police restrain nude man wielding knife near City College SF

    On Tuesday night police responded to a report of a man, sans clothing, wielding a knife, at Alemany Blvd and Leo Street in San Francisco.

    The story unfolded in stages and location changes. First, the man was seen wielding an eight-inch-long knife, clothing nowhere in sight.

    Then, police arrived on the scene and tried detaining the man, but to no avail.

    The man tried fleeing from the police and succeeded for a while, until police stopped him at a Burger King parking lot.

    Police used their cars to block the man’s path and attempted to deescalate the situation.

    Did it work?

    No.

    The man, refusing to cooperate, sustained injuries to his hands, though it is unclear how.

    An ambulance was on standby as the man climbed on top of a grate in a parking lot, then sat down and was unresponsive.

    Next Steps

    About an hour later, police believed the man dropped the knife into the grate. It appears accidentally, because he then dug in the grate to retrieve the knife.

    The man then changed locations and moved ot behind a vehicle.

    Emergency medical services approached the man. he cooperated with them.

    The man was reportedly restrained about an hour and a half after the incident was first reported.

    Mental Health in San Francisco

    It is unknown what the man’s condition was, physically and mentally.

    But, the behavior was erratic and unpredictable, indicating possible mental health issues or substance use.

    According to the 2017 City and County of San Francisco Point-in-Time Count, 41% of unsheltered people reported drug or alcohol abuse, 39% reported psychiatric or emotional conditions and 29% reported PTSD.
