Colorado residents invited to attend second educational session on wolf reintroduction efforts

(DENVER, Colo.) Members of the public are invited to take part in Colorado Parks and Wildlife's second educational session being held online May 20 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. to learn more about efforts being made for the reintroduction of wolves in Colorado.

The educational sessions will provide a common understanding of the considerations and logistics that went into the reintroduction of wolves into Yellowstone and Central Idaho in the 1990s. Furthermore, presenters will share their experiences regarding starting and managing wolves within the Northern Rocky Mountains.

Last year, Colorado voters passed Proposition 114, which calls on Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) to create a plan and reintroduce an adequate amount of gray wolves in the state by the end of 2023. The Denver Post reports that last year prior to the vote, wildlife officials had authenticated that there was a wolf pack present within Colorado for the first time since the 1930s.

The task force that will create a plan will make recommendations that will be utilized as a roadmap. However, the plan did not take into consideration any efforts made by humans to bring wolves back into Colorado as well as how much the state's land has changed over the course of 17 years.

Speakers at the second educational session are as follows:

• Ed Bangs, a retired U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, will discuss the logistics of planning for as well as reintroducing wolves to Yellowstone and Central Idaho.
• Mike Jimenez, another retired U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, will display biological lessons that are learned from the reintroduction. 

Those who wish to view the presentation live are required to pre-register and will receive an email with a link to the session. The sessions will be recorded and made available for the public who want to view the session after it takes place.

The next educational session will take place in June, covering livestock conflict management.
