Many people consider Memorial Day as the kick-off into Summer. While festivities may be subdued this year as we come out of the pandemic, there are still some great activities going on in the greater Tucson area to take part in. For many, it's a great weekend to get together with family and grill up some hamburgers. Others enjoy taking their family to the local cemetery and place American flags at the gravesites of fallen soldiers. It's important to stop and remember why we have Memorial Day off. We are honoring those who have fallen and sacrificed to protect our country. Here are a few of the patriotic events going on around town to celebrate this weekend.
There are a couple of different Fun Run's going on this upcoming weekend. If you're not sure about being in large crowds, there is a virtual run option being hosted by Moon Joggers. The nice thing about virtual runs is that you can do them whenever and wherever you'd like. You time yourself and send in your results. For $25 you get a race bib and medal. 20% of the funds for this virtual race are going to Operation Gratitude.
Another option for you fitness minded folk is on May 29th at Rillito Park. This is part of the Arizona Sunrise Series of runs happening around southern Arizona. Sign up early to secure your spot. Getting your run done early in the morning ensures you're not going to get the worst of the heat on your race.
Head on down to the Gaslight Theatre on May 31st at 7 pm to hear some classic rock tunes performed by Five Way Street. This is a cool event that has you drive your car or truck up and sit outside while you listen to some live music. I bet it's been a long time since you last went to a concert! The theatre will have concessions and you might be able to reserve some front seating if you get on it early! There's no better way to kick off the summer than a great outdoor concert.
Head down to the Tanque Verde Swap Meet Friday through Sunday to support local artists, sellers, and more. If you haven't been to the swap meet, maybe this weekend would be a fun time to try it out. There are food trucks, small business owners, artists, and more offering some great finds at good prices. You'll never know what you might find at the Swap Meet.
As a way to celebrate Memorial Day, the International Wildlife Museum is offering free admission to active, retired & veterans of the military all weekend long. Typically closed on Mondays, the museum will be open through Monday evening. Head over from 9 am to 4 pm (closes at 5 pm) to take in the sights and learn about conservation efforts for our wildlife. There are plenty of incredible exhibits to teach you and your family about the wildlife around the world.
Spend Time With Loved Ones
If none of these events pique your interest, remember, there's no wrong way to take the day off. Take an early morning hike in the Catalina Foothills. Bake an American Flag cake. Watch the Memorial Day National concert. Camp out in your backyard. Have a few friends over and grill up some hamburgers and hot dogs. The options are endless! Let's kick summer off right!
