Enjoy the best mocha latte ever at Cafe Madeleine on New Montgomery in San Francisco

One of my favorite spots to be a “tourist” in San Francisco is at Union Square or at least it was. The area has been badly impacted by the pandemic, it took spiraling retail closures into overdrive and the area has been overrun with encampments and crime. To make matters worse, things close early now so the area becomes very sketchy at night.

Before the pandemic, I would go over to Cafe Madeleine near Union Square and grab a coffee, sit out front and watch people passing by all day. People were busy shopping, tech types were having intense AirPod conversations, and there was hustle and bustle all over. At one point Cafe Madeleine had almost 3 cafes in the area and all but one have closed due to the pressure from the pandemic, one of them even replaced with Seoul-based bakery concept Paris Baguette.

The Cafe Madeleine location on New Montgomery still exists and it is still largely how I remember it. The best part being the Mocha latte, which has long been my favorite there. They start off with an excellent cup of coffee and then use their chocolate whipped cream on top that is absurdly delicious.

I’m not even really a sugar guy (I drink my coffee black most days by choice), and I will enjoy this latte over and over if possible. It’s such a refreshing drink and really makes me appreciate what so many cafes seem to lack, which is a quality latte.

To me - Cafe Madeleine belongs on a more sophisticated side of town filled with tourists (or at least maybe one day when the city comes back to life) or in a luxury hotel, but they seem to do pretty well regardless at this location with customers coming in and out for pastries, coffee, and lunch. All their cakes and pies look delicious, but I have yet to try them because the Mocha to me is the perfect sweet treat.

Many of the coffee shops in the area nearby are now “temporarily closed” or “permanently closed” which to me is really sad considering what a great time this area used to be and I am not really sure what is next for the area or how to bring it back to its previous liveliness, but what I do is that Mocha latte at Cafe Madeleine is exquisite and you should absolutely go and try if you haven’t before.
