For four decades, the Alameda Architectural Preservation Society (AAPS) has been offering historic home tours with the continuing goal of increasing public awareness and appreciation of Alameda’s range of historic architecture. On September 8th, as part of its Local Lore series, the Alameda Main Library will host past AAPS president Denise Brady.

Denise will present a slide talk titled, Forty Years of Alameda Home Tours: Beguiling Glimpses into the Past, including Architectural Styles, Heritage Neighborhoods, and Before-After Transformations.

The slide show will showcase the history of the AAPS Legacy Home Tour, how it evolved, and its purpose. The Alameda Architectural Preservation Society, previously known as the Alameda Victorian Preservation Society (AVPS), was founded in 1972 when Victorian homes were routinely demolished and replaced with apartment buildings. AAPS continues to advocate for the preservation of historically significant architecture.

Their annual historic home tour is an important tool in cultivating support and awareness for architectural preservation. The tour typically hosts up to 800 people who have an opportunity to view a selected group of homes.

Denise Brady is a local realtor and expert in Bay Area architecture from the decorative Queen Victoria era to the simpler lines of the 1960s. “Of course, people love to get inside the beautiful old homes. There’s natural voyeurism,” she says, laughing. “And when people become engaged with the unique qualities of vintage homes, they want to preserve them.”

At the end of the talk, Denise will invite interested parties to volunteer as docents for this year’s home tour on Sunday, September 26th.

This year, because of the pandemic, the event will be a self-guided walking tour that will highlight the different styles of architecture in the Leonardville-Bronze Coast neighborhoods of Alameda. Denise Brady will narrate the pre-recorded audio tour. Docents will be stationed along the route to guide visitors and answer questions. Go to alameda-legacy-home-tour.org for more information.
