  • Native American woman rescued from California Channel Island

Did you know the Island of the Blue Dolphins. San Nicolas Island is considered the most remote of California's Channel Islands off the coast of Ventura, California. Archaeological evidence suggests it was occupied by humans for at least 10,000 years. The island holds the true story of "The Lone Woman of San Nicolas Island" and the fate of Native Americans who lived on the island. The story is told in the 1960s children's novel "Island of the Blue Dolphins," by Scott O'Dell. The book is about a young woman named Karana. Who was stranded and alone on the island for almost two decades before being taken to the mainland by ship, only to find her people were not there. In this video we tell the true story and fate about this woman, who was named Juana Maria by her rescuers. And where you can find her final resting place.
