Fourth Creek Brewery closing is a loss to downtown Statesville

The Fourth Creek Brewing Company, Statesville’s first brewery since prohibition began, will close its doors for good in the near future.It had opened in 2018.

Founder Jonathan Nobinger put out a message to those he called the “Fourth Creek Family” last week on behalf of himself and his wife Krystyn. The message said the impact of COVID on business had continued to take its toll, and they felt they had no other choice but to close.

“The effects of COVID have drastically altered our community and though we tried to pivot our business model, our efforts were too little, too late. The government help we received was minimal against the constant equipment repairs, the ever-increasing price of materials and ingredients, supply chain issues, changes to customer spending habits and the list goes on. Krystyn and I have tried everything possible to prevent this from happening, but at this point, we have run out of options, and it is time for us to let this struggle end.”

Patrons of the brewery were emotional upon hearing the news. The brewery was known to many as their “second living room” due to the comfortable atmosphere facilitated by the Nobingers and other staff. Parents often with children in tow, singles, couples, people of all ages were comfortable, playing games and enjoying the live music and the food trucks often on hand in the back lot of the brewery.

“It’s my place. Where will I hang out now?” one patron pondered tearfully.

Speaking of the early days opening the business, Nobinger said, “Had I known then… If given the choice, I would still do this all over again. YOU have made it worthwhile.”.

Many in Statesville and beyond feel the same way about the Nobingers and the vision they served. The brewery added something special to downtown Statesville and its loss will be felt by many for a long time to come.

Not only will he town lose a brewery and spot for local nightlife, but there be one less venue for local musicians to perform, the food trucks the brewery brought to town may be lost to the community or at least seen less frequently, the trivia, open mic, and karaoke nights will end. The local beer, cider, and other drinks that will no longer be available will definitely make local options more limited.

The closing date is set for Saturday, March 5, 2022, or sooner if supplies run out.

Stop by 226 West Broad and have a drink this week, and thank the team for making downtown Statesville a little lighter and brighter.

And keep in mind that all local businesses need customers to survive. Spend your dollars locally to keep those that are here and to show others they will be supported if they open.
