Gas in Chicago: Use these 3 apps to find the cheapest gas near you

    2022-03-14

The average price of gas in Illinois has hit $4.56 per gallon, and it's sure to keep rising.

(CHICAGO) Gas prices have climbed to $4.56 per gallon on average in Illinois, according to data from AAA. And it's even higher in the Chicago area, with Cook County average prices coming in at $4.73 per gallon as of March 14th. This is higher than the country's national average, currently at $4.32.

Why are gas prices so high?

The US ban on Russian oil and gas imports due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine has caused prices at the pump to rise. However, public sentiment has been widely supportive of the sanctions, even though it means higher prices when you fill up your car.

A recent CBS News poll showed that 63% of respondents supported the sanctions, even if it means prices will rise. And 82% said this is because they want to support Ukraine and punish Russia for its actions.

Experts predict that prices will continue to climb, and it's not only due to international conflict. Covid restrictions have relaxed, more people are returning to work, and the summer demand for gas is approaching.

With that in mind, here are a few apps that can help you find the gas station with the lowest prices in Chicagoland.

    Google Maps

The Google Maps app and website will highlight gas stations nearby and show prices per gallon. All you need to do is go into the app or on the website and type "gas stations" in the search.

A recent search for the Chicago area shows prices in the city have already reached $5 and above. According to Google Maps, a Shell station on West Armitage had regular gas on sale for $5.30 per gallon on the morning of March 14th.

    Gas Buddy

Gas Buddy is another option you can use either as a mobile app or online. Put in your zip code to find gas prices near you. For example, when searching the River North zip code of 60654, Gas Buddy shows the best price in the area to be at $4.99 per gallon on Monday morning, March 14th.

    Gas Guru

Gas Guru is an app that works similarly to Gas Buddy. You can get it in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

    How to use less gas

You can also save money by using less fuel when you follow these tips from State Farm on fuel efficiency.

    • Follow regular maintenance visits. A well-maintained car uses fuel more efficiently.
    • Keep your tires inflated and rotate them regularly.
    • Avoid excessive idling.
    • Drive at moderate speeds.
    • Consider ride-sharing.

You can see State Farm's complete list of tips here.

yo... gas prices began to rise the day uncle joe took office, on day one, signing Executive Orders restricting oil production. They just didn't rise because of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Get your story straight. Stop voting D..... that will drop oil prices.
