  • A Denver Park That Commemorates a Revolt Against Soviet Oppression

In 1966, the Hungarian Freedom Park was renamed to commemorate the 1956 revolt of Hungarians against Soviet oppression. Two years later a memorial was erected. The memorial depicts a boy attempting to break through an iron curtain. In 1986, the Hungarian Freedom Park was listed in the National Register of Historic Places as a contributing feature of the Denver Park and Parkway System.

The first piece of international news I remember was the news of what was then called the Hungarian Revolt. There were many stories of the Red Army tanks rolling in the streets of Budapest. Story after story of 10-year-old Hungarian heroes bombarding those Russian tanks with Molotov cocktails and setting them aflame. I was also 10 years old. In my imagination I was by their side. I’ve never forgotten their courage.
