Beat the heat with Wendy's new Strawberry Frosty: It's only here for the summer

    2022-07-04

Say goodbye to vanilla this summer as Wendy's replaces its usual Vanilla Frosty with a refreshing strawberry flavor for a limited time.

Wendy's has been making Frosties for over 50 years without too much tampering with the flavors.

The original Wendy's menu included a mere five items: hamburgers, chili, french fries, soft drinks, and chocolate Frosty. The vanilla-flavored Frosty didn't show up in 2006.

Get your Strawberry Frosty while it lasts

This summer, Wendy's announced they would temporarily replace the Vanilla Frosty with strawberry.

"We're always listening to our fans and as the most-requested item, it was a no-brainer for us to bring the Strawberry Frosty to the menu this season," Carl Loredo, Chief Marketing Officer for The Wendy's Company, said in a press release.

And in a shady dig to McDonald's, Loredo added, "While some of our competitors are still trying to get their ice cream machines to work, fans can dip into this new strawberry treat all summer long at Wendy's."

(As any fast food fan knows, McDonald's has somewhat of a bad reputation for constantly broken ice cream machines.)

    Random facts about the Frosty

    • Wendy's serves its Frosty between 19 and 21 degrees Fahrenheit to keep it thick enough to eat with a spoon. (Founder Dave Thomas wanted an ice cream treat that was thicker than a milkshake but not as thick as soft-serve ice cream.)
    • Thomas added vanilla to the Chocolate Frosty to complement the burgers and prevent the chocolate flavor from becoming overwhelming.
    • Wendy's tried putting its Frosty in a waffle cone once. As you can imagine, this plan failed miserably, as the soft Frosty ice cream instantly melted into a giant mess.

How does the Strawberry Frosty taste?

Unlike the waffle cone Frosty, the Strawberry Frosty appears to be a success.

According to Wendy's press release, "the fruity addition merges the same creamy, delectable texture Frosty fans know and love with the flavor of sweet strawberry, perfectly encapsulating the taste of summertime. Some say it's a spoonful of summer in every bite."

Does it really taste like a spoonful of summer?

I tried the Strawberry Frosty for myself, and I have to agree with Wendy's. It does taste like summer. It's not overly sweet, but bursts with a fresh strawberry flavor.

It's a shame that Wendy's doesn't add a third Frosty line to their machines, giving customers their choice of chocolate, vanilla, or strawberry year-round.
