Val Demings.Dear Rick— Expect Biden to take swings at Florida Sen. Rick Scott during the first event being held in Fort Lauderdale. Biden has routinely called out Scott’s “Rescue America” plan because it would sunset all government programs every five years, thus requiring members of Congress to regularly vote to keep Social Security and Medicare in place. (Sen. Marco Rubio — who is running against Demings — has distanced himself from it by saying “that’s not my plan.”)Pushing back — Scott isn’t waiting for Biden’s arrival to go after him. Scott launched a television ad last night in South Florida, which will air again today, where he contends Biden is a “tax cheat” and that he should “resign from office.”Also on tap— During his official appearance, Biden will be joined by Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schulz as well as a Florida man who will be aided by drug pricing provisions that were included in the recently enacted Inflation Reduction Act. Biden is expected to say that Republicans will roll back some of the drug pricing provisions if the GOP wins back Congress.Different message— Biden’s decision to emphasize the fate of Social Security and Medicare — in a state with a large population of older residents — is a bit of a contrast to the top two Democrats on the ballot in Florida. While Demings has mentioned prescription drug prices and Social Security, she has spent most of her campaign hammering Rubio over abortion, gun laws and his attendance record. Likewise, Crist has made abortion a big part of his closing message in his race against Gov. Ron DeSantis.First campaign stop— This marks Biden’s third trip to Florida as president, but the first time he has held an official event in the state that wasn’t connected to a tragedy. He previously came to the state in the aftermath of the Surfside condominium collapse and then Hurricane Ian. Crist says that DeSantis is “happy because DeSantis thinks politicians like him should control women’s bodies.” …Demings has released her final ad of her 2022 campaign against Rubio. The 30-second ad starts out mentioning her background but it also includes a broadside against Rubio over his congressional attendance record and his vote against the Inflation Reduction Act, which includes provisions to lower prescription drugs over the next few years. She also maintains he will vote “to gut Social Security and Medicare.” …Rubio will be at two campaign rallies on Tuesday — one in Tampa in the morning and a second one in the late afternoon in Sarasota. The Sarasota event is being billed as a “Retake Congress Rally” by the Republican Party of Sarasota County and will also feature Reps. Greg Steube and Vern Buchanan as well as legislative and local candidates. …Prior to joining Biden at a late afternoon rally Demings will join author and actress Jenifer Lewis and meet with voters at a Miami restaurant.BY THE NUMBERS — More than 2.77 million people have voted ahead of the Nov. 8 election, according to the latest information on the state Division of Elections website. More than 1.9 million people have voted by mail so far. Of those, 820,098 have come from Democrats and 711,467 have come from registered Republicans. Overall, there are more than 2.41 million mail ballots that have been requested but not yet returned. Of those, more than 1.05 million are held by Democrats and more than 720,000 are with Republicans. Nearly 867,000 people have voted early. That includes 461,547 Republicans and 257,165 Democrats.
