Trump or DeSantis: Who's Better for American Foreign Policy?

    2022-11-14

Governor Ron DeSantis’ impressive win for his second term in the midterm elections cemented some expectations that he would run for the presidency in 2024.

The rumor has ignited more tension with a now-Floridian Republican, former president Donald Trump.

The election was closely monitored overseas. According to German politician Reinhard Bütikofer, “the pessimistic assumption that Donald Trump would become U.S. president again in 2024 has become a bit more unrealistic.”

    Another Republican President

These events led to the possibility that DeSantis could run in the 2024 elections.

What would that imply for the rest of the planet? DeSantis might, in some respects, appeal to more people than Trump.

If DeSantis gets lucky – and if the Democrats cede control of the Sunshine State to the Republicans, the wider impact on American foreign policy might be significant.

Here are some things to be considered:

DeSantis is not Trump. He positions himself as a civil servant, while Trump seems to be the businessman-turned-politician arsonist.

In the House and later as governor, DeSantis has primarily concentrated on domestic affairs, but most of what he has said about foreign policy adheres to accepted conventions rather than Trump’s frequently ad hoc approach.

DeSantis is a true Floridian, in contrast to Trump, who was born affluent in New York City and only later became a Florida resident. And in certain ways, he lives up to it, particularly when it comes to giving special attention to international matters that are important to many Floridians.

DeSantis may be more rigid and less open to persuasion, unlike Trump, who has his reputation as a dealmaker at stake.

If Democrats give up on Florida voters and DeSantis runs for the presidency in 2024, he is likely to carry the state easily.

Democrats, who are already unsure about their chances in the state, may consider Florida a lost cause.

How do you feel about DeSantis vs. Trump faceoff?
