We were married in a quaint gazebo at the top of a hill overlooking Eureka Springs Arkansas. Eureka Springs is one of our favorite towns to visit.
We loved staying at the beautiful historic Crescent Hotel. This hotel is full of old-world charm. When you walk in the front doors you see a magnificent fireplace and overstuffed furniture, it's so cozy that makes you want to curl up with a book and get comfortable.
Eureka Springs has the bragging rights of having a few haunted hotels. The Crescent Hotel was voted as one of the most haunted hotels in America. It is situated on a hill overlooking the town and offers beautiful views. The rooms are comfortable and updated but the hallways and doors all have that feel of old. Even though there are elevators, I prefer taking the stairs to get a chance to look at the old pictures on the walls. The pictures are very old and a little eerie. One time I had the chance to tag along with the ghost tour for a few minutes, and although I did not see any ghosts, the tour was very interesting. If you can't get on a tour, there are also self-guided tours available, and you can pick up the guide at the front desk.
The Crescent Hotel was opened in 1886 and catered to the wealthy “Carriage Set”. A stable with a hundred horses was offered to guests to ride, or they could choose tallyho rides. Now Crescent guests can have the experience of riding in a horse-drawn coach that travels through the winding Eureka Springs streets.
In 1908 the hotel operated as the Crescent College & Conservatory for Young Women. The college was open during the hotel off seasons, fall, winter, and Spring. The hotel went back to hotel operations when the young women returned home for summer break.
The Crescent Hotel was also operated from 1937-1940 as The Baker’s Cancer Curing Hospital. Norman Baker has a very interesting history check out the link.
Another landmark hotel is The Basin Hotel is located on the winding rock-lined streets of downtown Eureka Springs. The Basin Hotel was built on the site of the Perry house in 1881 and was lost to a fire in 1890 at the time it was considered one of the finest hotels around.
Rebuilding the hotel began in 1904 and was completed in 1905. The grand opening was held on July 1, 1905. The Basin Hotel is a beautiful historic hotel and although it has changed ownership and has had many renovations over the years, it is still worth booking a romantic weekend or at least taking a stroll through the historic halls.
Some other attractions around town are the Passion Play and Christ of the Ozarks. The Passion Play is something you cannot miss. I have seen it more than once and enjoyed it every time. The second time that I attended it there was a summer storm rolling in, the deep-colored clouds and thunder added to the awesomeness of the experience.
The statues of Christ of the Ozarks rising out of the trees this is an amazing site. The statue was erected in 1966 and it stands seven stories tall. This 24-layer, white mortar handmade statue is an amazing site to see.
There is so much to the small town of Eureka Springs. Located in the Ozark Mountains, the scenic drive through the winding hills is straight out of a fancy travel magazine. I love this picture postcard town and is one of our favorite weekend getaway destinations.
