McDowell High School’s Rho Kappa club is raising money for K9s for Warriors, a charity that takes dogs from animal shelters and trains them to become service dogs. The dog then gets paired with a combat veteran who suffers from PTSD, anxiety, depression, or any physical injuries resulting from their military service. The idea of sponsoring a service dog came from last year’s Rho Kappa president, Landry Kazee, who spoke with Rho Kappa advisor Ms. Redmon about holding fundraisers and putting the money towards K9s for Warriors. Usually, the cost to sponsor a dog is $25,000, but because MHS is a school organization, it costs $15,000. Last year, Rho Kappa set up a 5k, and all of the money made was put into the K9s for Warriors fund. When I asked Ms. Redmon about her thoughts on raising money for this cause, she said, “Rho kappa from its founding felt that issues that affect veterans should be top priority, and I feel it is important to give back to those who sacrificed so much for us.” Although there has been good progress made thus far, Rho Kappa is still a long way out from sponsoring a dog, so if you feel like this is an important cause, please consider donating. Any amount helps.
