How Will Improvements on SR 20 from I-575 to N. Corners Parkway Change Your Drive?

    2023-02-19

For those who drive SR20 between Canton and Cumming, big changes are underway to make your drive much easier. Georgia DOT is implementing a series of improvement projects along the 24-mile stretch in Cherokee and Forsyth counties. There is not yet a completed date projection, but here's what we know so far.

How Will These Changes Affect You

SR 20 is a popular route that sees more than its fair share of heavy traffic, unfortunate accidents, and overall driver frustration. These changes put in place by the Georgia Department of Transportation aim to:

    • Improve East/West mobility
    • Alleviate congestion
    • Reduce crash frequency

Big Changes are Coming to the I-575 to N. Corners Parkway SR 20 Stretch

The GDOT has plans to widen this 20-mile stretch between Canton and Cumming. Drivers can expect the following results when completed:

    • Widening this stretch of SR 20 from 2 lanes to 6 lanes (3 lanes in each direction)
    • Raised median with a width of at least 20 feet
    • Full median breaks at key locations
    • Turn lanes at major driveways and intersections
    • R-cuts for turnaround
    • Traffic signals at major intersections
    • Urban shoulders with curb and gutter

Where are We in the Process?

According to the most recent update available, the project team has refined the concept. They have taken into consideration traffic analysis, engineering requirements, and the public's comments. To see a list of detailed changes and how they may affect you, click here.

The next steps are completing the final design and the ROW (right of way) acquisition. A ROW acquisition involves securing the land they need in order to widen SR 20 to the desired and much-needed 6 lanes. This process typically involves making offers based on the appraised value of the land and using eminent domain when necessary. Most importantly, the acquisition process must comply with the DOT Right of Way Manual.

    Final Thoughts

Projects of this magnitude take time. While drivers are still a ways off from experiencing the final product, there is no question that it will be well worth the wait once completed. If you currently drive this stretch of road often, you can look forward to a much easier drive in the not-too-distant future.
