DeSantis Rocked by Explosive Ethics Scandal: GOP Panic Rising

    2023-03-31

With Donald Trump facing indictment and criminal charges in New York, yet another GOP heavyweight is under fire for the way they handle business.

The leader of the Florida Democratic Party has filed a second ethics complaint against DeSantis in response to his preparations for a prospective presidential run.

Nikki Fried, chair of the Florida Democratic Party, charged DeSantis with breaking the law by accepting gifts from his political committee.

"This is another example of Ron DeSantis arrogantly thinking he is above the law. No one is above the law," Fried said. "While Floridians face some of the highest property insurance and mortgage rates in the state's history, DeSantis is hobnobbing with special interest donors and lining his pockets with freebies. Floridians deserve answers, and DeSantis needs to be held accountable."

The main focus of the grievance is a three-day retreat that DeSantis had with contributors and Republican lawmakers at the Four Seasons in Palm Beach. According to documents submitted to the state, the Friends of Ron DeSantis political committee paid the resort more than $235,000.

The complaint also points to other expenditures, including $142,000 at the Four Seasons Hotel Miami for a meeting expense and almost $12,000 for food and beverages at Dirty French Steakhouse in Miami.

This is the second complaint filed against DeSantis in less than two weeks

According to a complaint made by Make America Great Again Inc., the Florida governor was charged earlier this month with breaking state and federal law by conducting a "shadow presidential campaign."

DeSantis' office dismissed that complaint on Monday as "politically motivated."

DeSantis is regarded as a leading candidate for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination and is aggressively putting together a campaign. However, an announcement isn't anticipated until later this spring, after the regular session of the Florida state legislature concludes.

Political committees in Florida are permitted to take unlimited funds from any individual.
