You Won't Believe What DeSantis Plans to Ban Now

Florida leaves the nation in shock by banning more school programs.

School districts in Florida are gradually eliminating social and emotional learning programs after a warning from the DeSantis administration that such curriculum violates state law.

With the claimed objective of educating children to be more sympathetic and understanding of their peers, social and emotional learning (SEL) has been implemented in many school districts across the USA. However, conservative critics warn that the programs serve as a "Trojan horse" or introduction to critical race theory.

Being safe, empathetic, or inclusive in any way is under attack in Florida. And compassion is just not a value the GOP wants to teach students.

The other side of the coin

Florida Education Commissioner Manny Diaz released a memo sent in February to the superintendents of Florida school districts that the SEL curricula developed by Edgenuity and Imagine Learning were prohibited because they violated state law forbidding divisive ideas from being taught in public schools.

“Edgenuity/Imagine Learning’s divisive and discriminatory content branded as ‘social-emotional learning (SEL)’ has no place in Florida’s classrooms," Diaz said. "Schools should immediately cease using any materials that conflict with Florida law."

Diaz thanked Miami-Dade County's school board for alerting the Florida Department of Education of materials in the SEL courses that "appear contrary to Florida law."

Since then, other school districts in the state have removed SEL from their curriculums and online presences. The School District of Palm Beach County reportedly removed "social-emotional learning" from its website and informed the state that the sessions were now known as "skills for learning and life."

Teachers' unions criticized the initiative to impose more regulations on the controversial curriculum, but conservative parent advocates praised it.

The abolition of SEL is DeSantis' latest initiative to eliminate the so-called woke education concepts. Florida has prohibited critical race theory from public schools and restricted classroom instruction on gender identity and sexual orientation.

DeSantis is losing a battle with Disney and other serious players, and he seems to be focusing on the institutions where he can actually exercise his power - Florida schools.
