Trump's Worst Nightmare is Coming True. It's Not the Indictment

    2023-04-05

Donald Trump is living through his worst nightmare.

Besides facing 34 criminal charges in New York, it seems like the former president is losing the support of his supporters. Sworn Trumpers are jumping ship. And the worst part is they're flocking to his arch-enemy, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

Republican voters who plan to support Ron DeSantis' bid for president in 2024 say they are tired of former President Donald Trump and that the news of his indictment has just made them more so.

    The winds of change

Republicans feared that if Trump received a nomination again, he might lose the general election.

Donald Trump sure talks about winning a lot, but his track record is flawed, at best.

Trump's ex-supporters say his personality, the "drama" surrounding him, his attacks on Ron DeSantis, and baggage from 2020 would hinder his chances in a general election. Not to mention that Trump is facing more than one criminal charge, and his former lawyer has already served his three-year prison sentence. The fact Trump lied over 30,000 times in public is also hindering the blind trust some of his supporters shared.

    All roads lead to primaries

Trump's campaign reported on Saturday that it had received over $4 million since the indictment and published the results of an internal survey taken from Friday through Saturday, which showed a growing gap between Trump and his rivals in the 2024 primary.

DeSantis made his first public statements since Trump's indictment on Saturday in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and Long Island.

Most participants expressed their outrage and disagreement with the indictment, and they cheered when DeSantis labeled it "flimsy" and lambasted Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

DeSantis condemned Bragg but indirectly aimed at Trump with the remark after Trump initially said he would be imprisoned earlier this month.

Trump stepped up his criticism of DeSantis, whom he views as "probably" his biggest 2024 primary rival. On his "Truth Social" social media platform, he frequently posts about DeSantis, criticizing his prior support for Social Security and Medicare reform, claiming he shared alcohol with minor students while working as a teacher in Georgia, and making fun of DeSantis for asking for his support for his bid for governor in 2018.

DeSantis has not formally announced his presidential bid but has been visiting primary states like Nevada, Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina. He seems like he's campaigning, and many expect he will announce his bid after the conclusion of the Florida legislative session this Spring.
