The village of Salinas, in the Dominican Republic, has three genders, and yes, it occurs naturally, and at least one child in every ninety this phenomenon happens. The third gender is known as pseudo-hermaphrodite.

When a young girl with this rare genetic disorder turns into a male, and yes, grows a penis. However, by the time the child is 12, they have naturally gone from girl to boy. Experts claim the gender change is due to a missing enzyme that prevents the production of the male sex hormone dihydrotestosterone in the womb—also known as Guevedoces, or ¨machihembras¨ which means ¨first a woman, then a man¨.

Most babies in the womb who carry the Y chromosome start to produce dihydrotestosterone in large amounts and produce a penis in the womb. Those having an X hormone female will develop a clitoris.

However, if the male baby is missing the enzyme, they are born with what appears to be a vagina. It is not until puberty that the testosterone released triggers the male reproductive organs to grow and the voice to deepen.

The baby was born with the Y chromosome, technically making them a male, without the dihydro-testosterone, which comes later in life, and by 12 years, the process is complete, and the boy child is fully developed. Yet before these children change during puberty, they have raised girls and even have girls' names.

One of the children was interviewed on the BBC documentary, Countdown to Life, The Extraordinary Making of You stated:

"I remember I used to wear a little red dress. I was born at home instead of in a hospital. They didn't know what sex I was.
"I went to school, and I used to wear my skirt. I never liked to dress as a girl.
"When they bought me girls toys I never bothered playing with them. All I wanted to do was play with the boys."

Dr. Julianne has studied this condition and has seen these children and their adult organs, and they function, as men, with no further abnormality.
