The Nation on Edge as DeSantis Escalates War on Disney

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and some Republican leaders assure Round 2 of the ongoing fight with the largest employer in the Sunshine State.

DeSantis and the GOP-led legislature tried to strip Disney of its self-governance status after the former CEO spoke out against the so-called "Don't Say Gay." Legally known as Bill 1557, it bans topics of gender identity and sexual orientation in schools.

However, Disney recovered and retained its autonomy in Florida.

DeSantis is frustrated with Disney

The State House Speaker, Paul Renner, called Disney's move "disingenuous."

In a special session, the legislature passed a law dissolving the district and established a new board comprising gubernatorial appointees in a special session in February. The previous Reedy Creek board established restrictive covenants that allowed Disney to maintain control, avoiding both the legislature and DeSantis.

The critics of Ron DeSantis take some satisfaction in witnessing the governor's scheme fail spectacularly in the open.

But the war is only intensifying. Attorney General Ashley Moody has requested the former board to turn over any records relating to Disney's involvement in the new deal.

DeSantis can do very little, legally

DeSantis is urging Florida's Inspector General to look into the situation, according to an article in the New York Times published on Monday,

Senate President Kathleen Passidomo said there is little the legislature can do now.

"We've got a lot on our plate," Passidomo said after being asked about the situation with Disney. "I don't anticipate doing anything in the near term."

Others are urging caution as political observers prepare for the second round of the DeSantis vs. Disney feud.

DeSantis is trying to make an example out of Disney. He's waging his war on "woke," and it's seemingly stifling business development.
