You Won't Beleive Why Trump is Quiet on DeSantis' Controversial Move

    2023-04-20

Former president Donald Trump rarely keeps his mouth shut.

It's one of his greatest qualities and greatest flaws. Trump doesn't hold back, especially not when his potential contender Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, is in question.

So, what's new? The former president has said nothing since DeSantis passed a law banning abortions after six weeks.

He did not criticize DeSantis for signing the bill late on Thursday.

Instead, Trump's aides have slammed DeSantis from both sides on the abortion issue. But it's unclear where Trump stands on whether abortion should be prohibited after six weeks.

Trump's out-of-the-ordinary timidity highlights the political peril of backing a six-week abortion ban.

Although the majority of the GOP's base of conservative voters support the new Florida law, Republicans as a whole have found it difficult to articulate a unified position on abortion after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and a half-century of precedent on reproductive rights.

Trump attributed Republican losses in the November midterm elections—which they were expected to win—to abortion politics.

According to a Trump adviser, the six-week abortion restriction has been the subject of internal debate ever since it became clear that the measure would soon be passed.

However, aides said they don't want to speak before Trump on the matter, with a spokesperson saying, "He will address it if he is asked about it."

Since he began his 2024 campaign, Trump has mainly avoided talking about abortion because it's one of the most polarizing topics among conservative voters.

Though the issue might come up on Saturday, Trump will call into the Faith & Freedom Coalition's spring event in Iowa and take questions, said Steve Scheffler, member of the Iowa Republican National Committee.

The abortion controversy, according to some strategists, has long been a problem for Trump.

What do you think about Trump avoiding this issue?
