The 78-year-old From Dusk Till Dawn star opened up to <a href="https://parade.com/news/mayim-bialik-reveals-the-surprising-job-she-had-before-big-bang-theory" rel="nofollow"> Mayim Bialik </a> on her podcast, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YsXNO1qZy9E" rel="nofollow"> Bialik Breakdown </a> , where he revealed the grueling details of his childhood. From drug and alcohol abuse to serving time in prison, Trejo has been through the wringer when it comes to his past, but the actor believes it all happened for a reason. "Everything that happened to me happened the way it was supposed to," he said while speaking with the Jeopardy! host before opening up about his alcohol addiction that started when he was just a teenager. "I'm drunk three days out of the week and I'm 15 years old, you know. Something is wrong. And Latino families, there's always a lot of <a href="https://parade.com/1367204/jessicasager/types-of-beer/" rel="nofollow"> beer </a> around in any kind of... so kids are like drinking, and it's cute," he said. Per Trejo, a relative introduced him to weed at age 8. "Gave me a fix of heroin when I was 12," he noted. "When I talk to psychiatrists they say, 'That was abuse’, well I thought it was sharing.” Trejo revealed that he got sober while spending time in prison in 1968, noting that he was "blessed" to be in solitary confinement after he partook in a prison riot. "I got clean there, I went to the hole in May I got out in <a href="https://parade.com/1400382/michelleparkerton/august-holidays-observances/" rel="nofollow"> August </a> and I was clean," Trejo revealed of his time in solitary confinement. When he was just 21, the actor was imprisoned in 1962 for drug dealing and robbery after being busted for selling heroin to an undercover agent. In total, Trejo spent 11 years in and out of prison. Aside from solitary confinement, the rest of Trejo's time in prison wasn't much brighter, but he made it out and found his passion in acting where he moved to Hollywood and made a name for himself. Trejo was discovered after he trained actor Eric Roberts on some boxing techniques for the film, Escape by Train . He was noticed and got offered a minor role in the movie, which started his acting career.
