California Uber Eats Driver Experiences a Scam Right After Signing Up. He is More Careful Now After the 'Test Delivery'
2023-05-06
A new Uber Eats driver picking up orders in Ventura County, California records a video and posts it to TikTok about how Uber Eats tested him for his very first delivery where they test him with a fake delivery. He later finds out that it was not actually from Uber Eats.
A new Uber Eats driver shares what he thought was a "test delivery" for his very first order. They get some information from him but never follow up with him. Now he thinks it was a scam.
New Uber Driver Experiences a Scam on His First Order
24-year-old Jake Benun signed up to deliver for Uber Eats in late March 2023, and posted a video on TikTok on 26 March 2023, with the description "Something you didn't know about driving Uber Eats!" The "test delivery" described actually took place on Tuesday, 21 March 2023.
In the video, he described a situation where he believes he is being "tested" by Uber Eats, where he is sent to a specific location to pick up food, and then someone calls him to verify his personal information. At the time he posted the video, he was confident it was legitimately from Uber Eats. He now knows this is not true.
He said:
"When you first sign up, they send you a delivery that's not actually a delivery that someone ordered. They send you a delivery that they ordered, so my delivery was at McDonald's, it was for, some sort of pie that they have. so it was like $4 bucks, but it was like right down the road so I was like, whatever, so I accepted the order and I go to drop it off but it's in the parking lot of this random restaurant. The order says, 'Wait in your car.' So I text the number I have, then call the person that's supposed to be picking it up, and guess who answers? Uber Eats. He says, 'Are you on such and such order?' Yes, cool. He's like, 'Actually, this is a test order, and so we just wanted to make sure you are you, and you are driving the vehicle that you said, so he asked me a couple of like, security questions, and so I guess they verify that you are who you say you are and you are doing what you are doing, which is crazy." -Jake Benun, California Uber Eats driver
His first TikTok video is below.
Jakes Follow Up Video to Uber Eats Support
After Jake posted this video, many people commented. One user said, "Man they got you! It's a scam they now have your information. Uber doesn't do that."
Jake responded (with grammatical errors): "We'll they did but they didn't. Their scam it seems was only. Luckily Tik Tok told me to check it out with Uber support. Check vid."
In his follow-up video, Jake actually calls Uber Eats support and they confirm that they do not test drivers like this and they do not ask for information over the phone from delivery drivers.
Jake starts by saying:
"So since so many of you told me that this is a known scam that happens to Uber Eats and DoorDash and whatever drivers, I figured we'd call Uber Eats support and just end the debate right now and find out if it was a scam or not, so here we go." -Jake Benun, California Uber Eats driver
Jake understands that the people leaving comments on his TikTok video were correct. This was a scam, and someone (that isn't Uber Eats) was taking down his information, such as answers to his security questions. He tells Uber Eats support that he changed his password.
The follow-up video can be seen below.
Final Thoughts
It's great that Jake was willing to call Uber Eats support and found out for himself that this was not a "test delivery" and was in fact, a scam.
If you are a delivery driver, be cautious about giving out your information over the phone or text. Just hang up and contact Uber Eats or DoorDash directly.
Please share this article on social media so others can be informed about this scam.

He had to stop and wait at four traffic lights and pull over to let an emergency vehicle pass then arrive and have to sit and wait in a parking lot burning up gas and ware and tear on his car all for $4.00 !
