DeSantis Shocks the Nation by Banning Crucial Public Records

    2023-05-13

Forida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a law banning conversations about his official trips, travels, and spending.

The new law would hide the governor's plans from the public, reducing the transparency of his actions while in office.

The entire DeSantis administration, not just the governor himself, might be allowed to keep secret trips and travels as long as the decision goes through the governor's office.

With this unprecedented move, DeSantis has increased his powers, eliminated transparency, and limited responsibility for his public actions.

    Controlling the information in Florida

The proposal was criticized as an attempt to prevent negative information about DeSantis before he gets ready to announce a run for president. The governor recently traveled to Israel and other critical primary states.

Republicans argued that the move was required to protect DeSantis and stop information about his travel schedule and security detail from leaking to anybody who might be preparing an attack against the governor.

When questioned about the measure last week, DeSantis claimed it wasn't his idea.

The law would apply retroactively and cover his considerable usage of state aircraft while serving as governor. Opponents claimed it would also apply to the governor's mansion visitor data.

It has occasionally led to uncomfortable revelations about Florida governors because such material has long been public record in Florida, where public access to governmental records and meetings is guaranteed by its constitution.

DeSantis signed the bill into law on Thursday and prohibited businesses and schools from requiring vaccinations or masks against COVID-19. He effectively batched a self-serving law into a Covid-package.

The prohibition is a continuation of DeSantis's blueprints which were first passed in November 2021 and are due to expire at the end of June.

What do you think about DeSantis passing laws to increase his own power?
