Spooky Idaho: Exploring the Most Haunted Places

    2023-05-21

Are you looking for a spooky adventure in Idaho? If so, you might be interested in exploring some of the state's most haunted places. While some may dismiss the idea of haunted places as mere superstition, many people believe in the paranormal and enjoy seeking out these spooky locations.

Whether you're a skeptic or a believer, visiting a haunted place can be a thrilling experience (just don't bring ANY of those spirits back to your home!).

So if you're up for a scare, grab some friends and head out to explore these haunted places in Idaho...

    Famous Haunted Places in Idaho

Idaho is home to many haunted places, some of which have gained national recognition. Here are a few of the most famous haunted places in Idaho:

    Old Idaho Penitentiary

This prison was built in 1870 and was in use until 1973. It is said that the spirits of former inmates still haunt the cells and the gallows. It's a wonder some people feel this place is haunted because it is said that over 130 people have died in this prison. The prisoners who lived here reported that they were haunted by something.

    Idaho State University

At Idaho State University in Frazier Hall it is said that an entity named Alex haunts this part of the university. People say that years and years ago a professor who worked at the university would bring her son with her to work.

The little boy liked going to work so much with his parent that after he passed away, he still kept coming back! People say he likes to play tricks on the students and falculty by opening and closing doors on them! Students also say they will often hear footsteps on the fourth floor when no one else is there.

In the theater room, 'ghosts' are known to appear and sit with the audience. Their favorite spot is in the top area of the theater room.

There is also a known ghostly figure in the R1 lot, in the top middle window! It is said to be a woman and she is staring at you at all times!

In Gravely Hall people say they can feel a strong presence among them. There is said to be a friendly ghost that has been known to open a few doors for you! How nice is that??

Also, locked windows open up by themselves. So spooky! There will also often times hear noises like footsteps, doors opening and closing and thumping sounds upstairs on the 2nd floor of Gravely Hall.

    Idaho State Tuberculosis Hospital

I don't know about you but any old hospital is haunted in my book and I think they are super spooky! The Idaho State Tuberculosis Hospital is one of these old hospitals that scare me yet I want to go visit it and take tons of pictures...

This place is known to have shadowy figures lingering around and scary apparations appear out of thin air. Weird and spooky noises have also been reported numerous times. This place has been featured on Travel Channels Ghost Adventures so you know it is haunted!

Think of the horrible and frightening secrets this place holds. So sad and just scary. I guess you can also stay the night in this hospital... do you dare???

    The City Of Lewiston

In the city of Lewiston, Idaho, people do say it is a haunted city! This city is said to have secret tunnels underground and that alone makes it quite spooky! There is a ghost that haunts the streets in Lewiston. She is called the lady in blue and has been spotted numerous times for decades in Morgan's Alley!

You can take 'ghost tours' and explore the underground tunnels. Who knows, you might just spot a lonely ghost spying on you from afar (or SUPER upclose!!). This would be a fun place to visit with a group of friends (or by yourself).

    River Road Bridge

This is a bridge in Caldwell, Idaho that you most likely will not want to cross, especially at night. The story says that a woman hung herself from this bridge. And, according to the locals, if you park your car on the bridge at nighttime and turn off the lights on your car, you will see the woman 'hanging' out by the side of the bridge. Have you ever seen her????

    Ammon Cemetery

Of course when you think of cemeteries you are going to automatcially think they are haunted. I mean there are plenty of spirits in them. But the Ammon Cemetery located in Idaho Falls is truly haunted. It is said to be haunted by a small child, which is truly heartbreaking to me :(

This little spirit has been spotted climbing a tree near his grave. His little spirit has also been seen waving at people while playing in the tree, to those who are walking by. I would love to go visit this cemetery just so I could interact with this sweet little love. So so sad when a little one passes away! I hope he is resting in peace and having fun in that tree!

    Shoshone Ice Caves

These caves are haunted! They are chilly (duh) and they are absoltuely haunted! People have heard footsteps and voices in these caves! They have also seen a shadowy figure in these caves.

There was an indian princess (princess Edahow) who was buried in the ice within these caves, so people think that is who is haunting these ice caves! What do you think? Have you been here??

Fish Woman of Lake Couer D'Alene

Many people say that near the large pointed rock at this lake, a fishwoman lives (well, her ghost lives..). Other people say that there is a large horned sea monster in this lake and it will lift boats out of the water. There are also unexplained sounds heard around this lake.

    Striker Ranch

At Striker Ranch, visitors have witnessed a few ghostly figures running in the field and have been also seen running around in the small cemetery there. People have also reported that doors will open on their own and lights will start flickering inside the cabin at the ranch when no one is around.

A group of local paranormal investigators called 'Super Natural and Paranormal Team' visited the Striker Ranch and actually captured video footage of a face emerging from the dark and then quickly disapearing. Seeing is believing, right? You can check out that video here (if you dare!).

    Malad City Cemetery

Another cemetery that is said to be haunted is the Malad City Cemetery. It is not a child though. This time it is the ghost of an elderly man who used to work at this very cemetery! Can you see him in the picture below?? (just kidding, that is not a picture from that particular cemetery...)

He is still very much concerned with keeping the cemetery looking its best because he has been seen over the years, pulling weeds and walking around to ensure the cemetery stays nice looking... What a dear old soul he is!

    Bear River Massacre Site

So sad and tragic! The site is located near the present-day city of Preston in Franklin County, Idaho. This is where U.S. Calvalry soldiers brutally murdered Shoshone men, women and even children, while they were starving to death :(

This was a horrible slaughter of innocence. The deathtoll was huge but thankfully some Shoshone survived this horrendous attack including Chief Sagwitch who helped gather survivors to keep his community alive. People say they can hear babies crying and see footprints in the snow, during the wintertime. Absolutely heartbreaking!

    Brigham Young University "Ricks College"

The ghost of Thomas E. Ricks, the founder of Ricks College, has been seen and heard at BYU. Many students have claimed to have had supernatural experiences and said they could actually feel the spirit of Rick around them.

Some students like this ghost and find it gives the school some character while others are down right scared! There are plenty of horror stories about how students have stayed out late and past their curfew and then they 'see' the apparation of Rick.

One time, two girls who were in their apartment in Rexburg together. They started to hear some noises coming from the vacant room in apartment late at night. They tried to ignore it but that did not work! The girls then decided to check it out and they were startled to see the ghost of Rick standing there! Now that would be cool but scary!

    Idanha Hotel

The Idanha Hotel was located in downtown Boise. It was built in the 1900's. Nowadays it is apartments and has been renovated.

Apparently, bellmans ghost (he was gunned down when it was a hotel) has been said to move the elevator up and down. Many have also spotted his ghost in the halls looking at them from around dark corners.

Lights also will turn themselves off and on frequently. There were also scary creepy moaning sounds and whispers coming from different parts of the building. There has also been a sigting of a grey colored apparation in the building.

If this was not frightening enough, there was once a woman who was brutally murdered and then buried in the hotel's basement. She has been known to hang around mostly in the lower levels of the building. Some also say there is another agressive ghost who haunts the 3rd and 4th floors and is known to actually pull the guests out of their beds! This reminds me of that movie, Ouija... yikes!

There are also tons of stories that I found about people who have since lived in these apartments and tons of scary things have happened to them too. Mainly things with the elevator and things happening on the 3rd and 4th floors of these apartments. Not a place I would want to live, that is for sure. How about you?

I could literally go on and on and on and on... (you get the picture, right?), but I simply don't have the time to go through all of the haunted places in Idaho, so this will have to do for now. However, if I got paid for writing these articles, I might just add more, but that is not the case (yet).
