Celebrating the Army's Birthday and Flag Day

    2023-06-13

Today, 14 June, marks two significant events that require our attention and reverence: the United States Army's Birthday and Flag Day. These occasions remind us of the bravery and sacrifices of our Army Soldiers and the symbol of unity and freedom our flag represents.

I was privileged and honored to serve in the US Army for 28 years and owe most of my success and good fortune to that service. I completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism during my time in the Army and pursued a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT) with the GI Bill after I retired as a First Sergeant in 2007.

By the way, being a First Sergeant was the second-best position I held in the Army. The first was as a Drill Sergeant. Training young couch potatoes about our weapons and tactics to become Soldiers was exciting and fulfilling.

Many don’t realize 14 June is the 248th birthday of the US Army but only the 247th birthday of our country. The Army was established with the motto, "This We'll Defend," a year before our forefathers declared our independence from Britain. It was America’s first national institution.

    Celebrating Valor and Service

The Army's Birthday serves as a moment to express gratitude to the men and women who have served or are currently serving in the Army, protecting our nation and preserving our values.

It is an opportunity to reflect on the Army's rich history, its evolution, and the unwavering commitment of Soldiers who have dedicated their lives to defending our freedoms.

Our Soldiers serve in 800 locations worldwide, so they not only serve and protect our freedoms but the liberty of many to live in peace.

Flag Day: Honoring the Symbol of Freedom

Flag Day is also celebrated on 14 June.

Today commemorates the adoption of the United States flag in 1777. This day provides us with an occasion to pay tribute to the iconic symbol of our nation and the principles it represents.

The American flag stands as a beacon of unity, reminding us of the sacrifices made by our predecessors and the enduring ideals of liberty, justice, and equality. It is a time to reflect on our flag's significance in our daily lives and reaffirm our commitment to upholding its values.

    Remembering the Historical Significance

Both the Army's Birthday and Flag Day carry deep historical significance.

The United States Army has played a pivotal role in shaping the nation's history. From Lexington-Concord to Gettysburg to New Orleans to Antietam to modern-day global battles against tyranny and terrorism, our Soldiers stand in harm’s way.

“If we desire to avoid insult, we must be able to repel it; if we desire to secure peace, one of the most powerful instruments of our rising prosperity, it must be known, that we are at all times ready for War.”—George Washington.

It reminds us of the resilience and determination of those who have fought for our freedom and security. Similarly, Flag Day connects us to our nation's foundation and serves as a reminder of the principles that have guided us throughout our history. It is an opportunity to educate ourselves and future generations about the sacrifices made to protect our liberties.

    Celebrating Both & Commemorative Activities

Various activities can help us celebrate and honor the Army's Birthday and Flag Day on these important occasions.

Parades, flag-raising ceremonies, and community events provide opportunities for communities to come together and express their appreciation for the Army and the American flag.

Additionally, volunteering at veteran support organizations, writing letters to Soldiers, or participating in educational programs can contribute to the commemoration and show our gratitude.

    Final Thoughts

As we celebrate the Army's Birthday and Flag Day, let us take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices and bravery of our servicemembers who have dedicated themselves to protecting our nation.

Through commemorative activities and reflection, we can honor our history, express our gratitude, and reaffirm our commitment to upholding the values that make our nation strong.

May these occasions remind us of the resilience and courage that define our nation and inspire us to work toward a brighter and more united future. At the same time, we must remember our flag should not be used as a symbol of hatred and exclusion, nor our Army for aggression. IMHO.
