    The Department of Health and Human Services and the American Heart Association (AHA) recently recommended that adults get 150 minutes of moderate physical activity every week.     Fewer than 1 in 4 adults are meeting this exercise goal. Those who have disabilities, the elderly, or those who have a low socioeconomic status have even more obstacles to getting the exercise they need.

    The good news is that your 20 minutes a day can be cumulative. All of the walking you do during the day adds up.

    “Going for a brisk walk gets you moving toward that goal,” Gerald Jerome, PhD, FAHA, volunteer chair of the writing committee for the scientific statement and a behavioral exercise scientist and professor in the Department of Kinesiology at Towson University, said. “Taking the stairs or parking a little farther away from a store entrance also helps you move toward your goal.”
