One of the senior representatives for Ron DeSantis's super PAC is sounding a depressing alarm.

He says DeSantis' campaign is fighting an "uphill battle" and is falling behind Donald Trump in crucial primary states.

Steve Cortes, who had previously backed Donald Trump, praised the former leader as the "runaway frontrunner" and "maestro" of the debate. Many saw DeSantis as a great Republican hope for 2024 and the only person who could defeat Trump. That hope seems to be

"In the first four states, which matter tremendously, polls are much tighter; we are still clearly down. We're down double digits; we have work to do," Cortes said.

The comments acknowledge vulnerability from within a top presidential operation, in contrast to the often self-assured demeanor of other DeSantis staff members.

Cortes stated that once DeSantis' political and personal history is discussed more extensively on the campaign trail, the gap between Trump and DeSantis might close.

After working on the Trump 2016 and 2020 campaigns, Cortes backed DeSantis for president in May.

In the same month, he became an adviser and spokesperson for the Never Back Down super PAC.

In national surveys, Trump has consistently maintained a double-digit lead over his 2024 opponents. Yet, none of them have been able to attract the same support or enthusiasm as the former president. Following two indictments, one for an alleged hush money payment to a porn actress and the second for allegedly mishandling confidential data, his hold on the Republican electorate has become stronger.

DeSantis has been lagging behind Trump in national and local polls, although he is viewed as his biggest threat.

The Republican National Committee will organize a debate between the candidates for the Republican nomination for president in 2024 next month.

But Trump has signified that he will unlikely participate. Cortes said Trump not joining the debate is a "great disservice," but this would benefit DeSantis.
