Kate Brown.He’s one of 53 inmates eligible for clemency who helped fight wildfires in 2020, including 14 in Multnomah County.The governor granted clemency to 41 of them.A spokesperson for the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office said Brown commuted the sentences of three of the 14 cases in Multnomah County. Calhoun was one of them. <blockquote>“In the specific ones relating to the wildfire service commutations, where we had a short time to turn around the materials submitted to our office, we didn’t take a position,” said Schmidt in a media availability Tuesday.</blockquote>Schmidt said Multnomah County wasn't the only county who didn't review the cases.“The overwhelming majority of district attorneys across the state didn’t take positions on those cases,” he said.But a spokesperson for the Washington County DA says their office reviewed the cases in their jurisdiction, and they opposed 17 of the 19 cases. Fifteen inmates stayed in prison as a result.And a spokesperson for the Clackamas County DA says their office opposed nine of the 14 cases. The nine inmates they opposed stayed in prison.Schmidt said he didn't think Calhoun's early release would have affected his possible involvement in the suspicious deaths.“Mr. Calhoun had already served the significant portion of his sentence before the remaining 11 months were commuted by the governor, and I’m not aware of anything that would suggest that that 11 months really would have been the game changer,” he said.Calhoun was released in July 2021, a year earlier than his planned release of July 2022.The first woman among those under investigation was reported missing in December 2022.</div></body>
