Is Donald Trump Actively Spreading Rumors?

    2023-09-05

Former President Donald Trump is actively spreading a rumor regarding Florida Governor Ron DeSantis' intention to withdraw from the presidential campaign.

Trump tweeted some juicy rumors to his 6.4 million Truth Social followers, alleging that "rumors are strong in political circles" that DeSantis will soon drop out of the race for president to take on fellow Republican Rick Scott in the race for the Senate in 2024.

DeSantis giving up the final two years of his term as governor to run against a GOP senator seems incredibly implausible.

Of course, Trump's intention was not to provide accurate information but to support the thesis that the DeSantis campaign is struggling.

DeSantis has never been excellent at tamping down Trump's bullying; his regular, tacky reaction to Trump's nicknames is that the former president can use whatever he wants to call him: "Just as long as you also call me a winner."

Similarly, the campaign's response to Trump's "rumor" was uninspiring.

DeSantis' press secretary Bryan Griffin posted on X:

"This is fake news. Clearly, Donald Trump and his army of consultants are panicked about @RonDeSantis' winning debate performance and the strong momentum that has followed."

The primary is not a two-person race, DeSantis did not unambiguously win the first GOP debate, and Trump's claim about "fake news" is prevalent.

According to many people, there may be little time for the governor to prepare his strategies for thwarting Trump. He won't be in the contest for very long.

DeSantis consistently shows he cannot compete with Trump, the worst bully in American politics.

Trump has retained a significant lead over DeSantis in the polls through intimidation methods: calling the Florida governor juvenile nicknames, insulting his looks, and mocking him for his ways.

Do you think Trump's rumor-spreading tactics are effective, or does it contribute to a toxic political environment?
