Age Limit for Presidents? DeSantis Sparks 2024 Debate

    2023-09-13

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis believes former President Donald Trump's age like that of President Biden, is "a legitimate concern" for voters going into the 2024 presidential election.

Republican presidential candidate DeSantis said that the Founding Fathers should revisit the Constitution and include age restrictions for elected politicians.

"I think that's absolutely a legitimate concern. The presidency is not a job for someone who is 80 years old," the Florida governor said.

Age has become an important point of the 2024 campaign.

Trump is 77 years old, about three and a half years older than President Joe Biden, who is 80.

DeSantis, who will turn 45, contends that the United States needs a president with vigor and that it is high time for a new generation to assume responsibility in Washington.

"There's nothing wrong with being 80. Obviously, I'm the governor of Florida. I know a lot of people who are elderly. They're great people, but you're talking about a job where you need to give it 100%," DeSantis said.

"We need an energetic president, and I think that if the Founders could kind of look at this again, I do think they probably would have put an age limit on some of these offices."

DeSantis is confident that if he wins the Republican nomination and competes against Biden as the Democrat nominee, "a lot of Americans... are going to want to see a generational passing of the torch".

Although Biden's old age has frequently come up during the campaign, DeSantis has never specifically addressed any worries about Trump's significantly younger age.

As of publishing, Biden and Trump have yet to issue their responses on the comment.

Do you agree with Governor DeSantis that age should be a concern for voters in the 2024 presidential election?

I hate to agree with anything DeStain says but I will agree that politicians (all of them) need to retire by 70 if not sooner. They can coach and advise the younger ones. For example DeStain could use coaching not to ruin Florida any further.

Common sense and IQ test is what all elected officials should have to take and pass before being on ballots.
