Johnathan Payne Kliebert is accused of murdering his mother and her dog after waking up in an “angry state,” according to local law enforcement.

Kliebert, 19, allegedly grabbed a shotgun and shot his mother and her dog in their sleep just before calling the police on himself and admitting to his crimes at around 1:45 a.m. Tuesday.

He told the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office that he murdered his mother, 46-year-old Ashley Kliebert, at her home in the Ponchatoula area, an hour outside of New Orleans.

Sheriff Daniel Edwards wrote in a Facebook post that Kliebert made the 911 call while he was at a hospital waiting to turn himself in. Authorities responded to the call and apprehended the teen while other officers drove to the suspect’s mother’s house.

According to police, Ashley Kliebert was found dead in her bedroom with a gunshot wound to her head.

“Upon interviewing Kliebert, he disclosed he awoke in an angry state, brandished a shotgun, and killed his mother and her dog, both of which were asleep in the bed,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

During the interview, Klibert reportedly admitted to a slew of other crimes. He is currently in custody at the Tangipahoa Parish Jail. He was officially charged with one count of the following crimes: first-degree murder, armed robbery, cruelty to animals, and aggravated crimes against nature.

In Louisiana , first-degree murder could result in a life behind bars. Though the death penalty remains a legal penalty in Louisiana, the state has not performed an execution of such since 2010.
