Man Accused of Killing Wife Allegedly Sent Chilling Texts Afterward

    2023-09-27

According to court documents, a Missouri man was detained on Friday after his wife was discovered dead with his last name carved in blood on her leg.

According to a probable cause statement, John Wonder, 31, and his wife were both employed by the same company and were the targets of a welfare check after his supervisor noticed they were both away from work on Friday.

Various news outlets and a Facebook post from the victim’s mother have identified his wife as Ashli Ehrhardt. The suspect and victim were in the midst of a divorce.

After the employer contacted Ehrhardt's parents and Wonder's mother on Friday, they met Kansas City, Missouri, police officers outside the couple's home, according to the probable cause statement.

Ehrhardt's body was discovered in the laundry area next to a big butcher knife and a cleaver, according to the probable cause statement. She was nude from the waist down, with the name "Wonder" inscribed in blood on her leg. She was bleeding from multiple puncture wounds on her body and had a belt around her neck.

Police were informed by Wonder's sister and a friend that they had received mysterious and cryptic messages from him on Friday.

“For the record: it’s way easier and much more satisfying than you can imagine. See you around,” he allegedly texted his sister in reference to the killing, according to the statement.

“I keep thinking about how she never screamed. Just took it like a champ,” Wonder allegedly typed in a Facebook message to his friend. “What a gal. To honor her. I will not go out by a gunshot (suicide by cop) but by, hopefully a similar fate as Ashli.”

“Her thirdeye shakra, her moonstone, blah blah blah – a lot of good they did you, hun,” he allegedly wrote, according to the statement.

He allegedly also stated that he was "depleted" and that he had placed her gemstones beside her body in a previous communication.

According to his arrest warrant, Wonder is charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action, and his bond has been set at $1 million cash.

Ehrhardt's mother posted a heartbreaking tribute on Facebook on Sunday, saying that the couple's children are currently in their care and that her heart is "completely shattered."

“This is the mommy fountain that he has already created in her memory,” she wrote alongside a picture of a boy next to rocks and water sprinkling out of a planter pot. “We will make sure she is remembered in our home every single minute of every single day.”

There is no indication in the court records that Wonder has hired a lawyer or filed a plea.
