In the early morning hours of October 28, 2023, deputies with the Pitt County Sheriff's Office were conducting a driver's license checking station on NC 43 S. near Ervin Buck Rd., as part of the Halloween Booze it and Lose it campaign of the NC Governor's Highway Safety Program.

At or around 1:05 a.m., a white BMW passenger vehicle traveling North on NC 43 failed to obey commands to stop for the checkpoint and sped through the checkpoint station. Three deputies on the scene had to move out of the way from the yellow line to avoid being struck by the vehicle.

A detective pursued in a high-speed chase, which lasted approximately one and a half miles before the BMW came to a stop. The drive is identified as 23 year-old Bakari Christopher Adderley of Jacksonville. Open alcohol containers and a gun was located inside the vehicle.

Adderley has been arrested and charged as follows:

    • Felony Flee to Elude Arrest
    • Carrying a Concealed Gun
    • Assult with a Deadly Weapon (three counts)
    • Careless and Reckless Driving-Wanton Disregard
    • Driving While Impaired

His vehicle has been seized for forfeiture based on NCGS 20-141.5 "Run and You're Done"

The Magastrite gave him a $25,000 unsecured bond where he was then released to his Senior Marine Corps Officer.
