Oneonta, Alabama. In a distressing incident that transpired on Monday, a confrontation between Oneonta police and an armed individual resulted in an injured officer and a deceased suspect, according to authoritative sources.

The incident unfolded within a residential neighborhood on Sand Valley Road, triggered by a call received around 11 a.m. reporting a suspicious person knocking on doors in the vicinity.

Upon their prompt arrival, Oneonta police encountered the armed individual, who swiftly evaded capture by fleeing into a nearby wooded area, prompting an immediate pursuit by law enforcement. The tense situation escalated into a brief standoff within the wooded terrain, culminating in the suspect brandishing a firearm and an ensuing exchange of gunfire.

The wounded Oneonta police officer, reportedly sustaining a gunshot wound to the leg, was expeditiously airlifted to UAB Hospital and is currently reported to be in stable condition, as officially confirmed by Blount County Sheriff Mark Moon. Regrettably, the suspect met a tragic end, with Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey confirming the individual's pronounced death at the scene.

Responding to the gravity of the incident, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency's State Bureau of Investigation has assumed control of the investigation, following standard protocols for cases involving officer-involved shootings.

An ongoing investigation seeks to unravel the complexities of the gunfire exchange that unfolded during a confrontation initiated by a call for service in an Oneonta neighborhood. Authorities remain committed to uncovering the details surrounding this tragic incident.
