Govenor Walz and Minnesota Recognized as Leader in Data-Driven Policymaking

    2023-11-22

Governor Tim Walz and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan announced today that Minnesota has been recognized for the second consecutive year as a leading state for using evidence and data to guide decision-making and deliver better results for residents.

The recognition comes from Results for America, a nonprofit that promotes data-driven policymaking.

    Investments in Evidence-Based Programs

In a virtual event with the National Governors Association, Gov. Walz highlighted Minnesota’s recent “historic investments in evidence-based practices to improve lives,” including $1 billion per year for four years towards evidence-based services for children and families.

The state has also dedicated $1.7 million specifically for evaluating and improving existing programs using data.

“It’s important for state agencies to test assumptions about programs and to invest in services we know produce positive outcomes,” said Erin Campbell, Commissioner of Minnesota Management and Budget.

    Data-Driven Policy Goals

Minnesota aims to promote equitable outcomes through data-driven policymaking. This includes focusing budget decisions on evidence of what works.

According to Results for America CEO Michele Jolin, “By building more efficient and effective governments, [states] are helping restore the public’s faith in government’s ability to tackle our most urgent challenges.”

    Highlighted Programs

Specific evidence-based programs Minnesota has invested in recently include:

    • Universal school meals
    • Expanded child care assistance
    • A child tax credit to reduce child poverty
“From universal school meals and child care assistance to a child tax credit to reduce child poverty, we’re making historic investments in evidence-based practices to improve lives,” Lt. Gov. Flanagan said.

    National Recognition

Along with Minnesota, only four other states (Colorado, Connecticut, Utah and Virginia) were recognized by Results for America this year as top states leading the way in evidence-based decision-making.

Gov. Walz said, “I am proud that Minnesota has once again been recognized as a leading state for our commitment to data-driven decision making. By using data and evidence thoughtfully and investing in policies that achieve results, we will continue to improve the lives of all Minnesotans.”
