The bacterial infection known as "walking pneumonia," or Mycoplasma pneumonia, is brought on by the bacterium Mycoplasma pneumoniae. This respiratory disease is well-known for its mild symptoms, which are sometimes confused with a cold, although it is very contagious. Don't be misled, though, as this pneumonia can have immobilizing symptoms.

According to, St. Louis Children's Hospital, infections with Mycoplasma pneumoniae affect about 2 million people in the US annually. Pneumonia develops from such infections in 5–10% of cases. Because of it, up to 100,000 people are admitted to hospitals annually. Numerous upper respiratory tract illnesses, including bronchitis, can also be brought on by the mycoplasma pneumoniae bacteria.

    Transmission

Similar to how the common cold or flu spreads, respiratory droplets are the main way that mycoplasma pneumonia is transmitted. Sneezing, coughing, or even just chatting can send these droplets into the atmosphere, where the bacteria can spread to other people. The bacterium can only live on surfaces for brief periods of time, which helps slow it's spread when contaminated objects come into contact with it.

    Contagiousness

Mycoplasma pneumonia is regarded as relatively infectious in comparison to other respiratory illnesses. The contagious period might continue for several weeks after symptoms have subsided and usually starts one to two weeks before symptoms manifest. It's important to remember, though, that not everyone who is exposed to the germs will have symptoms or become sick. Furthermore, those with compromised immune systems are more vulnerable to catching the virus.

    Prevention and Control

Mycoplasma pneumonia can be prevented in part by adopting preventive measures such frequent hand washing, covering one's mouth when coughing or sneezing, and avoiding close contact with sick people. To further stop the illness from spreading, maintain proper respiratory hygiene and seek medical assistance as soon as symptoms appear. Putting into practice efficient preventive measures requires an understanding of how Mycoplasma pneumonia spreads and how contagious the disease is. Many people may not become very ill from it, but by being aware of its spread and adopting the appropriate safety measures, its negative effects on public health can be greatly diminished.
